At the dawn of humanity the ancient hunters invented the first fishing rod - a simple stick attached at the end with line and bone hook. Much later the Greeks invented bushings and so the first multi sections rods appeared. Judging by stone inscriptions dating back to 2000 BC angling with rods was widespread in ancient Greece, Egypt and Mesopotamia. In medieval France and England someone thought to place on the rod guides and wound the line on a simple reel.

During the industrial revolution the material used for the rod itself changed from heavy woods native to Europe, to much lighter and more elastic varieties imported from the New World. Bamboo rods became the generally favored option from the mid 19th century until the late 1960's.
